Ahead of bypoll, licensed gun owners asked to deposit arms (INDIA)
Ahead of the bypoll, over 90 licensed gun owners in Saharanpur have been issued notices to surrender their weapons with immediate effect to the district police. “People have started surrendering their weapons already. The notices were issued two days ago,” said a senior police officer. The last date for depositing weapons is August 27.
“During the election, each licensed weapon will be kept in the strong room of police stations,” said the officer.
While police claims to have law and order in control and are calling it a routine exercise, locals are worried about the illegal arms possessed by people in both old and new city.
On July 26, Saharanpur had witnessed communal clashes in which rioters had fired gunshots killing at least one man and injuring others. The city is going for bypoll next month and the last day of filing the nomination paper is on August 27.
Meanwhile, the district administration has formed special teams for video recording of all the bypoll campaigning BY all the parties. The bypoll is going to be three pronged contest involving the BJP, Congress and SP. The city has over 3.88 lakh voters.
