Ways to Treat Your Migraine Without Popping Pills
If doctors and pharmaceuticals had their way, we would be consuming pain medication day and night for no good reason at all. The excessive prescription problem in USA traces its roots back to 1997 when two expert panels issued guidelines to encourage doctors to prescribe more prescription pain medicines to promote so called “compassionate care”. Following this, the number of pain prescriptions shot up. Between 1997 and 2007, per capita retail purchases of methadone, hydrocodone, and oxycodone increased 13 times, four times, and nine times respectively. And it should come as no surprise, medicine abuse shot up. But what should surprise you is that medicines abused were largely gotten through legitimate doctor’s prescriptions according to the CDC.
People may think that prescriptions are safe because they are prescribed by a doctor. But painkillers are very addictive and can have the same effect as heroin. Painkillers make people euphoric and at the same time can slow down their breathing. And over consumption of these pills can stop breathing altogether. Dying from an overdose is the worst case possible. Painkiller addiction is very real and it can ruin people’s lives. Prescription drugs can make people lethargic, rob them of your drive and give them sleep apnea. Also these drugs can also turn people into addicts who will do anything to get their next “fix”.
So you can see why one should be very careful with painkillers. One of the major areas where pain killers are prescribed is for migraines. There are methods where you can manage your migraine without using painkillers.
Reduce the body temperature
Lowering your body temperature helps to get relief from the migraine pain. Put an ice pack on your forehead, scalp or neck to get pain relief.
Experts aren’t sure why this works but one plausible reason is that it reduces the blood flow. You can use a frozen gel pack or a wash cloth rinsed in cold water.
Coffee and tea are some of the easiest sources of caffeine. Caffeine may give you some mild relief. But moderation is the key here. Too much caffeine can be bad for you and lead to withdrawal symptoms like fatigue and more headaches.
Over the counter drugs
You do not need a prescription to buy painkillers called NSAIDs, like ibuprofen and naproxen. They help to cut down inflammation that makes your head hurt. Be sure to consult a reliable doctor before you start taking these on a routine basis.
Regular exercise is something all of us Americans need to do more of. You should not exercise during a migraine attack as it will make it worse. However if you exercise regularly you will have a lowered chance of getting these migraines in the first place. Exercise leads to your body creating endorphins and chemicals which fight pain. Exercising also reduces stress and improves sleeping patterns.
A good amount of magnesium in your diet can help prevent migraines. You can increase the magnesium in your diet by eating dark-green veggies, whole grains and nuts. You can also choose to take magnesium supplements but it would be better if you sourced it from nature itself.
This is also known as riboflavin. This is found in cheese, milk, chicken and fish. Studies have shown that a good intake of vitamin B2 will help prevent migraines.
